Polyphony Digital have created a spin-off game to their usually numbered Gran Turismo games. While these are usually extremely career based, collecting cars and upgrading to win, Gran Turismo Sport has taken the complete opposite route by making the game online only, with the single player being restricted to the Driving School (Licence tests in the old games), Driving Missions and Track Experience. Whilst it is possible to play offline, the game won't save and none of your unlocks will carry over to your online profile.

The online portion is akin to iRacing, where you wait for a certain time for races to start, which is every 5 minutes on a different car/track combination. You can qualify at any time and your fastest qualifying time will be used multiple times if you choose to play the same race. There are also public lobbies which anyone can make, however these don't contribute to the main trophies you will be aiming for.

The game is also endorsed by the FIA, who are the governing body for many motorsports.

The Mission Challenge section in Gran Turismo Sport allows the player to try their hand at a range of varied driving missions. There are 64 events listed. On the left side of the screen is a chart displaying current progress, as well as the number of gold, silver and bronze awards earned. Under the chart are the cars that have been won for earning gold or silver in all the events. However, the player must work through the stages, starting with the first one. It is not possible to skip ahead to another stage. After every 8 events completed, the player is gifted a new car.
